Winter Holiday in Saalbach-Hinterglemm

I’m not sure whether it was the powder snow, the sun over the Glemmtal or the Kaiserschmarrn on the Walleggalm – but my winter holiday in Saalbach-Hinterglemm was one of those trips you don’t forget anytime soon.

From the moment you arrive, you feel that things are a little different here. The village is full of life, the mountains glow in the winter light and there’s a laid-back calm at the same time. If you love skiing, good food and that special mountain feeling, you’ll fall for Saalbach-Hinterglemm right away.

A Paradise for Skiers

With more than 270 kilometres of slopes and 70 modern lifts, the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn is one of Austria’s biggest ski resorts. There’s something for everyone here:

Beginners love the wide, gentle blue runs around the Schattberg and Reiterkogel.

Intermediates enjoy the long panoramic red routes through the Glemmtal.

Experts take on the black World Cup slopes on the Zwölferkogel.

What I liked most: you can ski your way through the entire valley, glide from one mountain to the next and stop for breaks in some of the best mountain huts. And that’s where it comes in – the legendary Walleggalm.

The Walleggalm – Food, Atmosphere & Mountain Views at 1,500 Metres

Right in Zone C, beside pistes 50–53, sits the Walleggalm – a place that radiates energy from afar. Perched at 1,500 metres, it combines traditional hut cuisine, a lively après-ski scene and views that leave you speechless.

This is where everyone meets: skiers dropping in for a break, families having lunch, groups celebrating and mountain lovers soaking up the panorama. I order the famous Walleggalm pizza (absolutely worth the hype!) and later share a Tomahawk steak from Pinzgau beef with friends – regional, tender and perfectly grilled.

If you prefer stylish relaxation, make sure to reserve a spot in the Skybox or on the Infinity Veranda. Handcrafted lounge furniture, table service, wine and champagne – it’s a luxury twist on the classic mountain hut feeling.

From 1 PM, DJ Toni – the legend with the accordion – takes over. His mix of alpine hits and club beats gets everyone moving. Big names like Mental Theo, Isi Glück and Micaela Schäfer perform regularly, and suddenly the whole Glemmtal is dancing.

Easy Access – Even Without Skis

Something I really appreciate: even non-skiers can reach the Alm comfortably with the Walleggalm Mountain Bus. The shuttle runs several times a day from the Schattberg X-Press in Saalbach and from Hinterglemm right to the entrance. It’s perfect for families with mixed interests or groups who want to enjoy the mountain together without the stress.

Boutique Apartment – Stylish Living in the Heart of Saalbach

After a long day on the slopes, I returned to my boutique apartment on the mountain. It was modern, cosy and equipped with everything you hope for on a winter holiday: lots of wood, clean design, soft blankets and a panoramic window overlooking the peaks.

It’s the ideal place to unwind – whether with a hot tea, a glass of wine or a quick sauna session before hitting the slopes again the next morning. My favourite part: the heated outdoor whirlpool.

Action on the slopes by day, peace and comfort at night – that balance is what makes winter in Saalbach so perfect.

Christmas & Events at the Walleggalm

I was lucky enough to visit during Advent – and Christmas in the mountains is genuinely magical. Lights, music, fireplaces, festive menus and that feeling of being far away from everyday life. The Walleggalm is a great place to celebrate with friends, family or colleagues, and group bookings are welcome.

Alongside Christmas events, you can look forward to Tomahawk Steak Nights, the weekly hut evening and the legendary New Year’s Eve celebration with a four-course menu, fireworks and DJ Toni.

Conclusion: A Winter Holiday That Stays With You

A winter holiday in Saalbach-Hinterglemm is already special – but staying in a boutique apartment combined with a visit to the Walleggalm turns it into something unforgettable. Everything just fits: perfect slopes, great music, real food, plenty of sunshine and people who truly love what they do.

Whether it’s a family trip, a getaway with friends or a romantic weekend – once you’ve been to the Walleggalm, you know: winter is simply better up here.
